Basic actions

Keyboard shortcuts can be reassigned at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

On lists where the whole card is one big link (classifieds, catalogs, news feeds), a normal click takes you to another page. That's why the extension takes over clicks with Alt held down: the site doesn't see them, no navigation happens, and Alt + double-click places a note right in the card. Without Alt everything works as usual. Right-click → “Add a note here” also works on such lists.

Editing and formatting

In view mode a note is just text: no buttons, no frames. A mouse click or a tap opens editing together with the toolbar, and the cursor lands where you pressed. Editing closes with Esc or a click outside the note. On the toolbar:

• Style — bold (Ctrl+B), italic (Ctrl+I), underline (Ctrl+U), strikethrough.
• Font and size — 9 fonts, sizes from 11 to 40 px.
• Emoji (😊) — a grid of 40 emoji: marks and deadlines (✅ ❗ ⚠️ 📌 📅 ⏰), contacts (📞 ✉️), reactions (👍 🙏 🤔). The emoji is inserted at the cursor.
• Colors — text color and note color, separately.
• List — a bulleted list with one button.
• Clear formatting — returns the selected fragment to its plain look.
• 📌 🌐 – ✕ — pinning, visibility, collapsing and deleting.

If a fragment of the note is selected, formatting applies to it. With no selection, it applies to the whole note.

Text pasted from the clipboard or dropped into a note always becomes plain text: foreign markup and styles don't get into the note.

Links in popup windows

The 🔗 button (or Ctrl+K) inserts a link. For each link you can set the window width and height and turn on “open in a popup window” — such links are marked with ⧉. Clicking one in view mode opens a separate Chrome window of the given size, while your tab stays where it was.

Only http and https addresses open in a popup window. mailto: and tel: links go to a new tab and are then handled by the system.

Note placement, pinning and visibility

A note doesn't lie on top of the page — it takes up space in its layout: an empty block of exactly its size is inserted into the markup in its place, and the surrounding text moves aside. If the note fits entirely in a block, the text flows around it on the left or right — depending on which half of the block you brought it to. If it doesn't fit (a narrow column, a short paragraph), the note takes a full line and the content below moves down. No text is left covered.

While a note is being dragged, you can see where it will land: a frame highlights the layout block, a blue bar shows the line the note will go before, and a dashed rectangle shows its future place and width. A note wider than the block is narrowed to the block's width. During dragging the note leaves the layout, and the text closes up again.

The place is saved as a description: the layout block, the node inside it and the line the note was inserted into, plus coordinates in the document. Next time you open the page, the place is rebuilt, so the note ends up next to its text even at a different window width. If the site has changed and the place no longer exists, the note lies on top of the page at its saved coordinates — drag it, and the place will be recalculated.

• 📌 Pin to the screen — the note leaves the layout (the text closes up again), stops scrolling and stays attached to the window.
• 🌐 Visibility — “this page only” or “every page of the site”.

If a note is covered by a popup, a dialog or a sticky site header, it hides automatically and comes back when the covering layer is closed. The extension doesn't hide a note you're currently editing or dragging.

Touch screens

Dragging and resizing work with a finger. In view mode the gesture is captured by the whole note, so the page under it doesn't scroll; in edit mode, scrolling the text inside the note works as usual.

The extension window

Clicking the NoteInSite icon on the Chrome toolbar opens a window with all the controls:

• the “Show notes (everywhere)” switch — turns notes off globally;
• the “Show on this site” switch — turns them off for the current site;
• the “＋ Add note” button — a new note on the active page;
• the list of notes on the current page, with a jump to any of them and a delete button;
• the “New note settings” section — default color, font and size, popup window sizes;
• “Export all”, “Export this page only”, “Import” and “Delete all notes on this page”.

Export, import and deletion

There are two kinds of export. “Export all” saves the extension's entire storage to a JSON file — it's a backup and a way to move notes to another device: the extension has no syncing between browsers. “Export this page only” saves the notes of one page — its own notes and the ones shown across the whole site, exactly what's visible on it. The file name comes from the page address, for example noteinsite-example.com-docs-api-2026-09-18.json — handy when you need to give a colleague your remarks on one document rather than your whole collection.

“Import” loads either of these files back. Notes are added to the existing ones, and those with matching internal IDs are skipped — the same file can be loaded twice without duplicates.

There are three ways to delete notes:

• the ✕ button on the note itself — a single note;
• “Delete all notes on this page” in the extension window — all notes of the page;
• removing the extension from Chrome — all of its local storage is erased.
